Everybody has their critiques. We start forming likes and dislikes from a very early age. Some of our opinions are formed based on our own experiences & others we form based upon what we hear from the people around us. Children readily pick up what the grown-ups around them are saying. This is the reason most family members belong to the same political party and practice the same religion; it is what they grew up with. Plenty of what we value comes from what we were exposed to as children. Every so often we find that we change our opinion on something once we have experienced it for ourselves because the opinion was based upon what we were shown rather than from individual experience.

In the family I spent my childhood in my father liked to have things quiet. He worked very hard at his job & running a piece of farmland so when he sat down for the evening he did not like a fantastic deal of noise or activity going on around him. We could have the t.v. on low or he would put on tapes of classical music. It was the only music he would listen in to. If we had the radio on and country-western music, even country wedding songs, or rock & roll would come on he would say to us to turn it off. He did not understand rock and roll and he thought western country music was cheesey, even the love ballads & country wedding songs. I was exposed to rock and roll through my friends, radio and dances & like it. I didn't listen to country western music at all. I held my father's opinion of it. Then I started a dating a youthful man in college that listened to western country music all the time. He liked the beat of the music & the stories that most of the songs told.

I really liked him so when we began dating I put up with the music & tuned it out. We then went to a large outdoor concert that featured several of the hottest country-western bands. From that time on I was hooked. I found that I also liked the stories the songs told and the music was entertaining to dance to. At the out-of-doors music show event I met several of my boyfriend's friends. They taught me how to line dance to some of the songs. I slow danced to some ballads & country wedding songs. After university I moved to another city & so I lost touch with my boyfriend. Finally I married my present husband & we are raising our family. I still listen to all manner of music, but each time I hear western country music I think back to that music show and how I came to appreciate it. I aim to let my kids experience quite a few different things growing up and try not to influence their evaluations.
