Tips On Kidney Stone Treatment - How To Get Rid Of Kidney Stones
If you have ever suffered having a kidney stone, you are aware how painful it can be and most likely, the kidney stone treatment that the urologist will choose will often be the least invasive, depending on the size of the stone.
Sad to say, many of the treatments to remove the stones are not really less pleasant than the stones themselves are. If your stone is small and the doctor feels it will pass by on its own, he may recommend pain medication, tell you to rest and drink a lot of water. You will know if you are drinking sufficient water by the color of your pee. If it is clear, that is an indication that you are drinking enough. Most often, kidney stones are small enough to be passed this way.
To those stones that cannot pass on their own, the least invasive kidney stone treatment is known as lithotripsy. This process is done while the patient is under a light anesthesia, typically known as a twilight sleep. The method consists of shock waves that pass through the body and break up the kidney stone. The patient is then sent home to rest, drink plenty of fluids and pass the stone fragments purely though their urinary tract.
Another type of kidney stone treatment that may be used is known as ureteroscopy. For this, the surgeon will pass a tube known as ureteroscope up through the urinary tract in which he will then use instruments to break the stone so it can easily be removed. This is most often used when the stones have moved out of the kidney and into the ureter.
A process known as a PCNL, or percutaneous nephrolithotomy, is one kidney stone operation that is more invasive. The surgeon may perform this procedure for larger kidney stones. With this procedure, the surgeon creates a cut in the patient's back and then inserts a narrow telescope into the kidney. The surgeon will then break the stone up and remove it. This procedure is used in cases of huge stones or in the event that the lithotripsy does not work.
Although rarely used, sometimes the surgeon also can make a cut in the side in order that he can reach the kidneys. This allows him to easily remove the stone. This kind of kidney stone treatment is rarely needed.
It is not uncommon for a person that has developed a kidney stone and has had a kidney stone treatment to form more stones afterwards. About fifty percent of the people that have a kidney stone will develop another one within 5 years unless measures are taken to prevent them. This could simply be by drinking more fluids or taking prescriptions that help your prevent your body from forming new stones.
Experiencing kidney stones can be a painful experience. Kidney stone remedies may differ from a simple round of pain drugs and extra fluids to more invasive methods and lengthy healing times. No matter what kidney stone treatment is chosen, working closely with your urologist will be the best course of action.
