Richard had a very difficult time maintaining a job. Indeed, due to his languor and lack of incentive, he was out of a job far more often than he was employed. And when he did secure a job, he had a very difficult time getting to work when his shift began, he typically received less than great performance reviews, and he called off sick so habitually that he typically got fired a week or two after he began working.

It goes without saying that one of the outcomes of Richard's poor employment track record was the fact that he was just about flat broke from day-to-day. Despite Richard's poor employment history and financial lack of attention, however, one way or another he made it a point to drink in a hazardous and excessive manner from day-to-day.

So it came as no big shock when Richard received a fifth DUI. When he went to court, the judge told Richard that his alcohol-related conduct was shameful and, consequently, he was going to sentence Richard to spend five months in the local jail.

During his time behind bars, Richard was required to learn more about alcohol facts such as alcohol consequences and alcohol deaths, about the devastating results of irresponsible and hazardous drinking, and he was expected to get alcohol counseling. The magistrate highlighted the fact that unless Richard receives professional alcohol treatment and learns how to live an alcohol-free life, he will most likely be spending a considerable amount of time placed behind bars.

Richard stated that he grasped what the judge was uttering but he still felt that incarceration was not the most effective ruling. The magistrate saw things from an entirely different orientation and said that it was his professional job to keep individuals off the streets who drive under the influence and who receive one or more DUIs. To corroborate this assertion, the magistrate articulated some honored, highly evaluated alcoholism and alcohol abuse statistics and facts that pointed to some of the unhealthy results that are linked to irresponsible and hazardous drinking such as alcohol related deaths.

Although Richard knew that he drank in an irresponsible and hazardous manner, he never thought that he was an individual who was dependent on alcohol. So it was a rude awakening when Richard began experiencing chronic alcoholism symptoms and signs and alcohol withdrawals nearly five hours after going to jail.

To treat his alcohol withdrawals in a safe and secure manner, Richard was taken to an alcohol rehabilitation hospital for alcohol detoxification and then brought back to the city jail. While locked up in the local jail Richard received alcohol counseling but because he got this treatment as something that was imposed upon him, he neglected to take ownership of his hazardous and abusive drinking.

When his time in the municipal jail was over, the judge without wavering announced to Richard that he would be under strict surveillance and would be required to take random urine alcohol tests. After hearing how Richard neglected to take ownership of his drinking situation and how he unenthusiastically followed the counseling regimen while in the county jail, the judge knew that it was only a matter of time before he would be seeing Richard once again in court about his abusive drinking behavior.

As the judge thought about Richard's circumstance, he couldn't help but think about how some individuals never use common sense and learn how to live in an adult and responsible manner.
