A Thoughtful Supervisor Helps A Worker Address His Hazardous And Excessive Drinking After A Broken Relationship

Barry dropped out of high school when he was fifteen years old and eventually got a job at a local crude oil distillery. For the past eight-and-a-half years he has earned a reputation as a reliable and hard-working person who infrequently calls off work due to illness.

Just about seven-and-a-half months ago he began dating a lady named Carol. They appeared to get along real well right away and looked as if they had a lot of fun with one another.

When Barry met Carol, he hardly ever drank. This circumstance totally changed when Carol and Barry began seeing one another on a fairly usual basis. In fact, everything was going fine until Carol surprisingly called Barry one night nearly 4:30 AM and told him that she had to call off their relationship and that she couldn't explain the reason at that moment.

The next morning before he went to work, Barry drove to her apartment and immediately discovered that Carol had already moved out. Barry received this news exceedingly hard. In point of fact, he was bewildered because they appeared to be getting along so well.

So what did Barry do? Instead of letting himself go through the grieving process, he started getting intoxicated nearly every night. It didn't take very long for his buddies at work and for his boss to see that Barry was coming to work late at least once per week and that he repeatedly called off ill. Moreover, some of his fellow employees made an appointment with staff in Human Resources Department and mentioned that Barry often came to work with a strong odor of alcohol on his breath or on his clothes.

Barry's manager heard about all of this from Human Resources and also from Barry's fellow employees. So one Friday afternoon he asked Barry to come into his office. He stated to Barry that he had recently noticed a distinct change in his behavior, work performance, attendance, and in his sick time.

"Barry I am not an authority about alcohol facts and I'm not especially all that knowledgeable about alcoholism facts, but I have seen several of my relatives and friends go through some really destructive difficulties because of their abusive drinking. My suggestion is that you take time and learn more facts about alcohol and what alcohol abuse and alcoholism can do to a person."

"Why is this important? When individuals engage in heavy and irresponsible drinking, their drinking issues not only negatively affect the problem drinker, but they also adversely affect his or her neighbors, co-workers, family, friends, and relatives. Barry, in sum, I would like to see you get some help for your abusive drinking from our employee's assistance program."

Barry admired his boss quite a lot and consequently followed through with his recommendation the very next day when he called and made an appointment with someone in the employee's assistance program. Although Barry didn't automatically feel any less depressed or feel better about the sorrow he still has about Carol, he felt some reassurance knowing that his supervisor and his fellow employees wanted what's best for him and cared about him. This gave him some psychological relief for the first time in quite a few months and he truthfully experienced some hope that he would get back on track with his life.
