A Physical Education And Health Teacher Instructs Her Students About The Important Issues Involved In Alcohol Dependency Signs
Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the largest co-educational high school in the state. Even though she had been teaching for only one year, she had already obtained a reputation as an educator with a teaching approach that motivated and encouraged the pupils in her class to think and to learn.
As an illustration, one Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 she addressed her students and stated the following: "For the next few days we are going to learn about some basic alcoholism signs from a general standpoint and we are also going to learn about a number of the most basic signs of alcoholism from a less general and explicit standpoint."
"Not every one of these alcoholism warning signs will without a doubt prove that an individual with a drinking problem is an alcohol dependent person, but the more signs that a person exhibits, the greater the probability that he or she is an alcohol addicted person."
Miss Jackson then explained to the the pupils that each student would be held responsible for examining two alcoholism signs and then presenting his or her results to the class by way of a ten minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the pupils completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcohol dependency signs that were presented and discussed in class and in the presentations. Miss Jackson then asked the students in her class to go over the list and rank the top five alcohol dependency signs that were most indicative of alcohol addiction. After around five minutes, Miss Jackson collected the pieces of paper and explained to her students that after she tallies the numbers, she will present her findings the morning of the next school day.
Miss Jackson asked the pupils in her classroom to look over the information on the sheet of paper she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any concerns, issues, or questions. Within a minute or two, almost every student in the class raised her or his hand. It was clear to see that the pupils had some questions, concerns, or issues about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism specialists. For example, almost every pupil had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism experts, to be precise, "Do you feel exceptionally nauseous when you stop drinking?"
Miss Jackson then informed the pupils in her class why this answer was the most clear-cut sign of alcohol addiction. She pointed out that the principal difference between alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse is the physical dependency that is experienced with alcoholism and not with alcohol abuse.
For all intents and purposes this means that when an alcohol dependent person suddenly quits drinking, she or he will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the relevance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the alcohol addicted person, the students started to recognize the main difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism.
A few minutes later the bell rang, indicating that the end of class had arrived. Based on the buzz exhibited by the pupils when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson recognized that she had encouraged and inspired the students in her classroom to stop and think about a vital health issue and social problem that exists in our country.
