A Nurse Practitioner Is Troubled With Her Frightful Depression And Makes Up Her Mind To Stop Drinking

For the past thirteen years Carolyn has been a licensed practical nurse at a city hospital. As a registered nurse, she undeniably knew what to tell her patients when it came to their health issues but in her personal life, however, she clearly didn't practice what she preached. For instance, she often drank in an abusive manner, she avoided any physical exercise whatsoever, she smoked roughly two packs of cigarettes on a daily basis, and she was approximately eighteen pounds overweight.

One morning on her way to the hospital, Carolyn got into a car accident. Since the accident was her fault and since her speech was jumbled when she talked, the arresting police officer administered a breathalyzer test. As per standard police operating procedures, when a person gets involved in a traffic accident and tests positive for a breathalyzer test, the individual has to spend at least three hours in the county jail.

Actually, Carolyn should have known better than to drive after she was drinking because she recently participated in an alcohol abuse awareness class at the hospital that focused on issues, statistics, and information about long term alcohol effects such as the following: alcohol poisoning, binge drinking, DUIs, and the essential differences between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency.

Needless to say, Carolyn felt embarrassed about her automobile accident. Additionally, she was feeling a lot of shame about the fact that the accident was her fault. And maybe worst of all she was quite embarrassed about the fact that she was driving after she consumed a few drinks. As Carolyn thought about this event, however, she thought how fortunate she was because down the line her drinking problems could have been a lot worse due to the long term effects of alcohol.

At any rate, Carolyn's humiliation about her traffic accident helped persuade her to go over her life and make some relevant and positive changes. First, she was going to quit drinking in an excessive and abusive manner. This would clearly help her stay away from long term alcohol abuse. Second, she was going to stop smoking. Third, she was going to go on a strict diet. And fourth, she was going to begin exercising.

As displeased and depressed as Carolyn was about the entire traffic accident situation, she used this painful experience as a springboard for beneficial change. Moreover, she used her upsetting experience as a realization that she had been failing to address her own health while she professionally told others how to live a more healthy life. After all had been said and done, she finally saw the two-facedness in her behavior and decided that she would live her life as a constructive source of motivation for other individuals.
